Historical Upscale Working Cattle, Horse and Riding Guest Ranch.

Built in 1927, The Trapper Creek Lodge is one of the finest and most elegant log buildings that can be found in the greater Shell, Wyoming area. The history of Trapper Creek Lodge can be dated back to 1882, when the first settlers arrived in the Big Horn Basin. During the roaring 20s, the 16-1 Stock Ranch (as it was called back then) was owned by The Wyman’s and welcomed affluent guests and "dudes" from the Eastern states, including Ernest Hemingway, Owen Wister and Theodore Roosevelt.

In 1926 The Wyeth family (owners of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) bought the ranch and guest ranch from The Wyman’s. In 1927 the Wyeth build the current Trapper Creek Lodge and the two guest houses which are currently staff quarters and guests quarters (The Trapper Creek Guest House). The log cabin made out our hand hewn square logs and build in 1886 by a French Trapper named Julius Boucher is one of the first log building in the Shell area. Julius Boucher who came like many of the French trappers from Canada changed his name to Joe Bush. Today several locations in the area carry the name Bush (Bush Creek, Bush Canyon,….).

The Hideout Riding & Working Cattle Guest Ranch

Today, the nearby Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch, owned by the same family as The Trapper Creek Ranch and Property, offers an upscale working cattle, horse and riding guest ranch experience in the same tradition as the prestigious 16-1 Stock Ranch.

Like the former guest ranch, The Hideout has a loyal clientele from all over the world and offers elegant lodging, fine dining, and a well-structured riding and horsemanship. In addition to riding The Hideout offers an array of non-riding activities such as Trapshooting, Fly-Fishing, Hiking & Biking, Canoeing & Kayaking, 4x4 Tours, etc. The Hideout takes pride in a very open minded multi-cultural clientele and offers their visitors a hospitality experience in 5 languages.

The Historical Old Shell Lodge along Highway 14 in the center of Shell.

In an effort to preserve the center of Shell, the family that oversees The Hideout and Trapper properties has purchased and restored The Old Shell Lodge, erected in 1896 as the only building in Shell constructed with local sandstone.
The building has been completely renovated, adding modern amenities while maintaining the historical integrity of the property. The Old Shell Lodge is currently is available for rent or lease and, with the surrounding private park, is a little gem in the center of Shell.
